The post

Just a warning to check your tow bar. After picking up our van (20ft) on the 30th of july travling just 1500km I looked at the tow bar on the workmate ute to find the welds craking at the top , where the ball and safety chain weld on to the cross member, it is a toyota 3500kg bar. I am now waiting for toyota to come back to me {ute only 6 months old).It could have been nasty if it came away all together. I will try to load some pic soon.

Hello G & V.
Had the same problem myself.
Toyota wanted to replace it, no argument, but with a similar bar.
I removed mine and welded a plate on top of bar with holes to match the holes in rear cross member and a brace from it to top of receiver tube.
No more problems, also eliminated the need to tighten the two bolts on either side of the chassis regularly.
No brilliance on my part as I seen this system on other manufacturers tow bars.
I don't know why Toyota haven't had their supplier adopt the same system as I have heard of, and seen the same problem on numerous occasions over the years.
Cheers,
Ken

We have also found our Toyota Tow Bar to have cracked across the top weld's, i have been checking our tow bar since G&V alerted me to the problem and it wasn't untill two days ago i saw a hair line crack appear on the top weld, since then we travelled just over 100klms from Ellenbrae to Home Valley on the GRR and the crack has extended and opened on both sides. Now in Kununurra we approached Toyota about replacement and our's will be replaced in two days time with the revised model towbar.

I spoke to a Toyota Ute owner at Home Valley towing a 21' Kedron and unknown to him found his was also cracked,

Cheers
