We don't want to go through Sydney, but need to go to Yamba.
Last time turned off through Armidale (? which way) and went through lots of mountain ranges and an awful winding road trip. We are from Tas and don't know the area

hi ros. this is the flattest road,that i know. come up the newell hwy to gigandra,turn off here for dunedoo,then on to merriwa. turn off here for scone,you are now on the new england highway. thru muswellbrook,singleton,maitland,to beresfield. the highway turns,to the right,for newcastle and sydney. and turns left to become the pacific hwy,this road is a divided dual lane road, nearly all the way to the yamba turn off. Hello Ros,
The Gilgandra - Scone route sounds a bit awkward. I'd suggest turning east from Dubbo on the Golden Highway, through Merriwa, (good butcher shop and pie shop), Denman, Maitland, and onto the Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace. We are half an hour from there at Nelson Bay, Port Stephens and have a BT exclusive free camp. (you're welcome).
There's a good free camp (with power and water) at the Cassilis showground, about 2km north of the Golden Highway.
The route has the fewest Hills of any route across the great divide, as you come through the westen end of the Hunter Valley near Merriwa.

Hi Ros,
Just got on the Net to suggest the route that Rob and Liz suggested.
The added bonus of a Pie Shop sounds like it would be great as well.
Raymond Terrace north to Taree is a freeway, very easy.
Then it is the narrow old Pacific Hgy from there. Not much free camping en-route.
Very scenic in Wingham and a good campsite at the Showgrounds or at Tallowood Ridge B and B, (about 5km out of Wingham).
Yamba is a lovely place.

hi. i dont think the route that i suggested,is very awkward?????? its a good flat road,to scone. then a very pleasant drive down the hunter valley,thru some very historic towns. when you do come from tasmania,i think you would want to see all you can on the way to yamba. regards ken & margaret brown | LIVING THE DREAM
