The post

OK all you satellite tv and digital tv watchers out there...I have a question..
I am in the process of up grading the tv in the van to an HD one with Sound In Motion. So far there has been no mention of digital aerials...what I would like to know is , will I have to upgrade the Wineguard aerial to digital as well? Also, I use satellite tv when we are in one place for a while, so is there such a thing as an HD decoder which I will need in order to watch HD tv through the satellite or am I thinking wrong.
Any thoughts?
Cheers, Jan O

We have a 19inch Digital TV from SIM and it works fine on the Winegard aerial.

We have satellite too but it is automatically digital from the satellite so the decoder is digital but unscrambles the signal for you. I don't think the Satellite is high definition but it works well for us.

Ours satellite system is a Vansat one installed by SIM.

Have a look at www.satplus.com.au.

Be aware that FTA satellite is changing to the VAST system. Full details are not released as yet. Current equipment will not work with VAST.

Also Wineguard is horizontal signal only, unless the aerial is modified. Digital is broadcast in vertical or horizontal, depending on location. A digital aerial from some one like Dick Smith is around $70.

Thanks for all that info Peter. It has really got me confused now though because Brian from Sound In Motion has told me that the Winegard antenae AND the sat tv decoder are already digital compatible. So who is right? He never mentioned the VAST thing....what does it all mean? Once it is up and running, will we all have to buy new decoders and cards to watch FTA tv?
Back to you.....

My understanding is that the Winegard is compatible with the horizontal digital broadcast, but not the vertical broadcast. Most places broadcast in horizontal, but some are vertical, e.g. Bundaberg is vertical. People with Wineguards in Bundy are having problems with the digital signal.

Go to www.satplus.com.au website & click on latest satellite news for FAQ's on VAST and other information. The new VAST (Viewer Access Satellite Television) system will offer viewers the same channels as terrestrial digital TV. See page 34 of "The Australian" of 27 July 2010 in the IT section. Sat Plus advise that existing FTA satellite equipment will not be compatible with VAST.

The new Austar (Mystar) & Foxtel satellite services now include the FTA terrestrial digital channels. A dual LNB dish is required to run this service.

Hope this helps.

Hmmmmm, thanks Trackor2 I think I will wait and see what arrives in the post (the new tv) and let Brian from S.I.M. sort it out for me as it all is too confusing for me. I could not get page 27 of the Australian like you suggested, only the headlines, but I did have a good look at all the websites for VAST. It'll all make sense in the morning as they say!
Cheers and thanks again for the replies from all concerned. Cheers, Jan O
