Van Insurance - BOG approaching Insurance Coy on behalf of Members

Has BOG ever entertained the proposition of approaching Insurance companies for a bulk discount for Members?

Have just received my annual renewal from CIL and again am shocked that again the premium has increased by 20% and agreed value decreased by the usual 5%. This seems to be an annual standard. Why does van insurance increase by so much when vehicle and house insurance have much less annual increases. Royal Commission??

Wouldn’t it be beneficial if BOG could negotiate a better deal on insurance for members which would also have the added benefit of attracting more members to BOG?

CMCA insurance with Ken Tame is the way I solved CIL price increase.

My understanding is that you need to have your vehicle insured with Ken Tame as well. This is not practical in our case.

You don't have to have your vehicle insured with them. Michael.

When did that happen Michael?
It was a condition when I signed up two years ago.

My Bushtracker has been with Ken Tame for almost 2 years but my RAM is with RACQ. When i said i was only going ahead with the BT they never questioned it.

CIL has been ruthlessly chasing profit since it changed to another lot of Underwriters.

Read my posts in this Thread: insurance premium anomaly

It is particularly wrong that CIL significantly inflated my premium compared to a brand new BT that was many years younger. It was all about my postcode compared to their postcode. When I pointed out that they were insuring a mobile object that would be towed through many different postcodes, they couldn't care less.

They don't seem to be worried that they are chasing away customers who have been loyal for years.

My advice: walk away from CIL until they wake up to themselves.

We have been with CIL for the entire 11 years of BT ownership, I have had to make 3 claims in that time and have been happy with the dealing and outcome of the claims.

This year I called them to tell them our axle broke and we were in an isolated area, the feed back impression I got from CIL was “Not our problem” it was certainly different to the sympathetic help I had received on previous claims. So what Stephen says about change of underwriters is most likely correct.

I’ve been intending to get some other quotes, majority of our insurance is with RAC so will give them 1st call. I’d love to give CIL a parting gift of a decent hail damage claim before I left though. lol

I changed to RACWA, Mick.

I got the lady on the phone to look at the "Pre-Loved for Sale" section on the factory forum while we were discussing agreed value. It helped them to understand what sort of quality they were dealing with.

Grumpy we changed over from CIL to Ken Tame about 18 months ago for this very reason. Recently we had to make a claim with Ken Tame on our car. The incident was no fault of ours as our car was parked and unattended. Anyway this goose got out of her hire car and left leaving it in neutral and no handbrake on. The car rolled from centre parking into our car. This was witnessed by a number of people (Good to live in a strong local community). Anyway Ken Tame handled it all as we gave them all the details. There was also no cost to us or change to our no claim state. The goose in her words blamed the hire car for being a silly car. I initially thought this would be a can of worms because we would be dealing with a hire car company but Ken Tame said to us even if they don't get the money out of them it would be no cost to us. By the way they got their money.

I tried RACWA and could not get a cover any greater than $75000 for a $160000 van??? Couldn't get my head around that one.. Stuck with WFI who are still good value.

It’s probably the way of shopping around what gives everyone their best result. Our previous off-roader and current Effie we went to Ken Tame because it was to hard to find an insurer for the Effie, the draw side of this is that KT does only combinations. Not a problem for the first 2 years because there is a full replacement clause, but it all unravelled after that. We were shocked with the depreciation for the van, this was on par with a say Jaco of 60k, not a van from over 120k. Due to to hard basket we left it with KT, and had a claim for hail damage and a claim for vandalising, our mirror from the truck was irreparable, caused by vandals when returning from shopping. Half way the 3th year we bought the BT and asked for a quote for the new van, way to much in our opinion, the truck was devaluated by far too much with all the extras on it. CIL was 1.2k cheaper then KT, so we opted to to settle with CIL consequently we were informed that we could not keep the truck insured by itself for a renewal.
After a lot of research we found an insurerer without any prerequisites like member ships etc. Insured the truck by more then 15k then with KT, along the same line as the depreciation schedule of the van with CIL and we were ahead with about $1000 with the total package from KT, this includes all comparable options for what you get for your $$$.
Interesting to hear all those better deals, we will see where we stand at the insurance renewal time.

Cheers,
Marinus

None of us have answered Grumpy’s initial question so maybe it’s something the Committee could take on board.

Still no response from BOG Committee on original query/suggestion!

An update on my Insurance renewal investigations -

WFI - will not insure in Nth Qld
NRMA - have a max level of sum insured of $98,880
Ken Tame - will do van on its own, agreed value $125,000, $3000 contents, $500 excess, have to be member of CMCA, Premium $1481 plus membership
RACQ - have agreed to insure for $125,000 (previously would not go above about $80,000) with $3000 contents, annexe/awning, $650 excess for an annual premium of $1522. (Note: have Vehicle and other Insurance with them so some discounts apply)

Have to compare PDS of each with CIL To see if any major differences.

The Committee will follow this up as it is of interest and important to all of us. Some interesting price comparisons.

Just thought I'd add too, a reminder to anyone reading this thread, that a message to the committee through this website, is more likely to get a prompt response because we don't necessarily read every thread. Cheers!

Thanks Wayne.

Would just point out that had sent feedback directly to the Committee through this website some time ago.

Apparently this is not always read either.

When we took delivery of our new BT, we got a reference number to be used when the insurance is taken out with CIL.
I quoted the number when we took out the cover and the response from CIL was ‘quote- Where did you get that number from- unquote. With this I had to believe that there is a special deal negotiated with BTi, however I still don’t know if we actually got a ‘special’ from them. Is there anyone who knows a bit more about this.

Cheers,
Marinus

Good Afternoon Grumpy,
I have read through your BLOG and all the other replies. This seems to be a good idea so I have placed your query on the Agenda for the BOG Committee to discuss at our next Committee Meeting late November.
