One of the rare Caladenias only discovered in 2006 by Greg Bussell. Greg is perhaps the foremost expert on orchids in the lower and south west areas . He is self trained and has at least one orchid named after him. The Boranup spider orchid, Caladenia boranup, discovered by Greg is one of stunning spider orchids with a very deep reddish pink labellum and occurs only in a small area in the Augusta shire.
Photo by Graeme W. who decided to show how endangered some of our orchids are. This is Bussells Spider Orchid, Caladenia busselliana. It was discovered by Greg Bussell in 1990.
The cage is to protect it from grazing , mainly by rabbits and roos . Like most of our rare orchids - and there are less than a handful of this one left - it requires a summer bur . Unfortunately most of our burns now occur in spring or autum and are not good for most orchids.

The labellum of the Dragon Orchid seems to resemble a female Thynnid Wasp and it also excretes the scent of this wasp. The male wasp becomes stuck on the hairs of the labellum and can only escape by moving towards the column and in doing so becomes a pollinator. Favours damp areas.

This is the biggest orchid I've seen this year , with very long sepals and petals. It is a cross between the grand and the sandplain spider orchids. Confirmed as Grand spider orchid, Caladenia huegelii.
This red and white spider orchid only occurs in a very small area and flowers later than others Caladenias. They are also a large plant that have very long calli on the top half of the labellum and are very red on the end part of the labellum. You will notice that the calli on the front of the labellum are also very small as opposed to the others and a funny shape.

Unusual striped flowers make the jug orchid unmistakeable. The plant grows up to about half a meter tall with several elongated leaves clasping the flowering stem. Usually only a single flower is produced on each stem, though occasionally 2 or 3 flowers are seen. The green and white colouring of the flowers changes to include red and brown tones as the flower ages.

Jug orchids are found throughout the SW of WA from Geraldton to Israelite Bay, although they are most common in the wetter forest areas.

You could easily mistake this common little orchid for grass. A small terrestrial orchid with 10s of tiny flowers crowded along a flowering spike that can grow up tp to 30cm tall. There is a single elongated leaf arising from the flowering stem. Often grows in thick colonies. Usually grows in wet seepage areas in grassland or Eucalypt woodland where it can become widespread and common.
