The trunk may grow over 3 metres tall, the often blackened appearance is evidence of its ability to withstand fire. The remains of the flammable leaves and the annual regrowth produce banding, allowing the age of the plant to be determined, and giving a record of previous fires in its habitat. The inflorescence appears on an upright spike, 1.5m to 2.5m long, between June and December. The sessile flowers, creamy or white, appear more profusely when stimulated by bushfire. It is found throughout coastal plains, near watercourses, and inland forest regions, in a range extending from Geraldton to Albany and in the Avon Wheatbelt. It occurs on a wide variety of soil types and is sometimes associated with laterite and granite.
Family: Xanthorrhoeaceae Genus: Xanthorrhoea Species: thorntonii Main Flower Colour: White
ExplorOz Team - MichelleSun, 17 Jul 2022 09:27:00 GMTGrass Treehttps://www.bushtrackerownersgroup.asn.au/wildflowers/765+grass-treehttps://www.bushtrackerownersgroup.asn.au/wildflowers/765+grass-tree Perennial tree-like monocot, to 5 m high, trunk to 5 m, scape length 0.6-0.8 m, spike length 1.0-1.5 m. The trunk is usually over 1m tall, and flowering is stimulated by fire. This species is endemic to South Australia and is restricted to Kangaroo Island, Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas.
Family: Xanthorrhoeaceae Genus: Xanthorrhoea Species: semiplana subsp. tateana Main Flower Colour: White
Stephen L (Clare) SASat, 06 Dec 2014 00:21:00 GMTYaccahttps://www.bushtrackerownersgroup.asn.au/wildflowers/643+yaccahttps://www.bushtrackerownersgroup.asn.au/wildflowers/643+yacca Xanthorrhoea quadrangulata is endemic to South Australia and occurs from St Vincent Gulf to the northern Mt Lofty Ranges. It is found on ridge tops, rocky outcrops and steep slopes of the Mt Lofty and Flinders Ranges. There is no variation recorded for this species. Plants flower in autumn – winter and set seed in spring – summer. Fruits turn brown on maturity and are dehiscent. Seeds are knocked out (gently) from each spike, and as they spill out of the open values are captured onto stretched out material or some other purpose-built container. No pre-treatment appears necessary for successfully germination of Xanthorrhoea seed. Seed is sown from early spring, for planting out the following winter and incorporated into direct seed programs.
Family: Xanthorrhoeaceae Genus: Xanthorrhoea Species: quadrangulata Main Flower Colour: White
Stephen L (Clare) SAWed, 19 Nov 2014 06:36:00 GMT
