A double layer of the cheap shade cloth sold by hardware stores spread outside the van lets sand and dirt straight through. Cost is peanuts and it works superbly.

This tip was given to me by a police sergeant a few years back at Gunlom Falls in Kakadu. He was a very fit man on his way to Alice Springs for the Masters' Games - if he happens to read this - thanks mate - it works like a charm!

Some of the Bushtracker gang at Cania had a new type of mat that I think was purchased from Camec, that has a thicker weave and end tapes with eyelets that looks even better than the shade cloth. Brian

Buy some extra ( cause you should have it already for the bed) open weave black "airflow" nylon material, available from Clarke Rubber. Dont' be put off by the price ( $100 per metre) as it's well worth it. Put the "extra" piece on the ground in front of the door and you will amazed how much stuff it traps. Cracker
