Hi there...

If there are any bird watchers out there that can help with this I would appreciate it...

I live in the scrub (Gum trees, Blackbutt and Paperbark) near Nambour (near BTI), and every year about this time 2 large grey birds call to each other AT NIGHT (they are the only ones that do that around here)...
The call is loud and raucous...sort of like rrrrooooaaaaakkk kaclk kackk kackk ....lol

There are only 2 and are obviously a pair...It does not have a long neck like a Stork or Ibis and is bigger again than a crow...ie about 1 1/2 times as big...The beak is grey coloured too (I think) and has a curve to it...

I have been looking on the net to no avail...If anyone knows a site that has bird pictures, that would be good too...

Thanks,

fosss

G'day Foss,

Sounds like a pair of Channel Billed Cuckoos. They arrive here at Nelson Bay about the same time. They lay their eggs in the nests of crows or currawongs and leave that bird to incubate, hatch and raise the young. (bastards!!) Problem is the chicks grow quicker and larger than the host's and kick the young currawongs or crows out.

Not a pleasant bird at all, and the night calls are annoying.

Cheers............Rob

Thanks for that info Bob...
I figured the bird was not liked because the Noisy Minors (we don't have the Indian Minor here yet...that's another pest I believe) give them a hard time wherever they fly about rooaaarking and aack aacking loudly...

Thanks again,

Just adding a bit more info...There are heaps of mentions about the Channel Billed Cuckoo on the net.
Here is one site that has a sound grab...and that is what it is like... only startling!
