My son, his wife and 9 month old baby will be flying into Hobart on 27th March for a quick 8 day look around.

Could one of the Tassie locals tell us please if they should book accomodation at that time of the year or is it easy enough to find somewhere to stay each night?

The other thing that they would like, is a suggested itinary to get the best advantage out of 8 days on the island. Working sure has its draw backs, just glad that I'm over that now.

Hi Brian

Our younger daughter took her new family (partner, 1 y/o and in-laws) to Tasmania year before last to show them her favourite spots while she could before baby number 2 was born. They went over Easter with a few days either side. I will ask her for the itinerary as she had it well organised and arranged flights, car hire and cabins on the Internet well in advance. I know her first stop was at Corinna, where she used to work, still run by the family she worked for around 10 years earlier. By the time we got there last year and went to meet the family, the business had changed hands. Obviously she had to bypass a lot of great places.

G'day Brian

in our 7 weeks we spent in Tassie, peak season middle Dec - beginning March we mainly free camped but in that time we saw many B&B's advertising accomodation, i'd presume it wouldnt get any busier than then. For 8 nights, i'd suggest east coast Swansea, west coast Strahen, North Launceston & South Hobart i'd expect no troubles finding accomodation there. For 8 days with transport you can see a good 'tourist' look at Tassie.

I'm booked on the boat 'Spirit of Tasmania' for the 4th March. I have used some publications obtained over the www through googleing "tasmania". Also I went to a Flight Centre and got a copy of 'Tasmania' by www.tastemptations.com.au. This is considered a leading brochure/book. The better idea could be another publication which I got:'AATKings' Tasmania. I suggest this one for your request as it has the packaged tours set out. There are 5, 6, 8,10,and 12 day tours with descriptions of sights covered. Use the two to work out an itenery. I found out booking for the popular towns e.g.Strahan is essential. March is the top $ month as demand is high then. Devonport was all but booked out weeks ago due to the extra "day" boat crossings which ply the "canal" over the warmer months. I'm not taking my BT. I decided to do a month in my little red limo and take notes for a BT trip next year. Hope this helps. cheers, Neil.

Hi Brian,
We did a similar trip to Tassie a few years back and only had 10 days so we booked a hire car and Cosy Cabins package. This gives you bookings at Cosy Cabins throughout Tassie (caravan parks) but allows the freedom of having your own transport so you can choose to stop and go as you please.
One of our nights was at Cradle Mountain in a Pencil Pine cabin, another in Strahan, one in Hobart, another down near the Wineglass Bay area. You do need to book before setting out but we did the island in the 10 days and didn't feel too rushed.
Hope this helps

Hi Brian.
Yes they will need to book Strahan, but every where else should be ok to just rack up. Places well if they go to the east coast first they probably see any other parts, as you could easy spend 8 days there.
Regards Peter.

Brian, Your family have probably booked by now, but i asked my daughter tonight. She said they flew in to Burnie and left from Hobart, to maximise time and distance. I will let you know further when she gets back to me; she said with a toddler, they only drove for around 2 hours each day, and still fitted their trip to see the things she'd chosen and got to the cabins as booked on schedule. She did say they booked 2 nights at Port Arthur, but moved after one because they didn't like it there. Other cabins were good, but the eco-toilet was a bit on the nose in the one at Corinna (which was only really on her schedule because it was a 'going back' trip for her).

Yes they have booked their air fares and I have passed all this information on to them.

Domenique Betts was kind enough to gather up a lot of tourist booklets from Tassie and post over to them, so they now have lots of good information to sift through.

Hi Brian, I hope they have a fabulous time. I'm sure they will want to go back and see more. Sorry i never got a plan from my daughter - i was a bit slow asking her, and with a young family and busy life, i think she forgot. Regards, Motherhen
