We found another “must do” before venturing with the BT on extreme offroad conditions.

Make sure the filler cap is on TIGHT!

After a wonderful Easter break on a property on the Araluen – Moruya road (far SE NSW) which involved low-range, low-gear driving over 6km of mountains to get access, we found on the way home an unpleasant smell, you can guess what!

Question:
Is there any convenient way to remove covers from the inside of the Thetford cabinet to be able to thoroughly hose out the spill?

There is about 1mm clearance under the enclosure into the shower. (some Boggers reckon this should be sealed off so shower water wont get in) This clearance is not enough for a thorough cleaning.

Any positive suggestions?

(don’t come too close for a while)

Neil

We had it happen once, but after you have done it once you will always make sure it is tight in future.

We just used a high pressure hose to get in under cassette as best we could, then after that had drained out plugged up the shower hole, and left the base of the shower with water in it containing Pine-O-Clean and Dettol and that seemed to change the foul smell to a pleasant one.

When hosing it out MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT HOSE TOWARDS THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS UNDER THE SEAT AND WHERE THE FLUSH BUTTON IS AT THE BACK. We did the above and paid for it with a broken micro switch in the flush control.

When our van was built there was about a 5mm gap in the curved section on each side of the front of the cassette. If yours is a better fit then I think you will nead to enlarge the gap a bit to allow and solids to be flushed out.

Similar thing happened to us once, had the cassette in the back of the F250 to empty at a local toilet block, when we arrived found that the cap had come off and contents splashed around the back in the tub. Straight to a local car wash and used the high pressure hose to clean out the tub.

The gap between the shower and the Tetford compartment is deliberate - I thought ours hadn't been sealed propoerly, and BTi explained to me that the whole of the shower and Thetford cubicles are part of one large sealed unit. The idea is that if you do spill stuff in the Thetford, there is a way for it to return to the shower area and down the drain.

I think I have got that right.
