Just been to BT for our second design session -excitement is growing! We have meanwhile acquired a new LC100 TD with IFS and 17" rims. Got the theory of running them with BT wheel setup from Steve. Can anybody shed any light of the day-to-day implications of running such a setup. Does it work? Do punctures send you into panic mode? Do you recommend the Dueler tyres for the LC as well for the van, or are there superior alternatives? Help!
Jim

Steve would have explained that the IFS model has a different offset to the non-IFS Landcruisers. They can get the LC wheels to fit the BT by using solid packers which then compensate for the offset.
I looked at this, but I remember it was fairly costly, but also added I think about another 30kg to the weight of the van.
Whilst it is desirable to be able to interchange wheels between the car and van, I think it might be helpful to canvass other Boggers on how often (if ever) they have had so many punctures to warrant the need.
In my case, I have a rear wheel carrier on the Landcruiser (so 2 spares for vehicle) and of course 2 spares for BT (which in itself is arguably an overkill unless you are doing really serious stuff?). Whilst I can't interchnage the wheels, in worse case, tyres are interchangeable but it would be take some real effort without the right gear.
I am not saying not to proceed with the interchangeability option, just sugggesting that the puncture experience of other Bggers might provide additional info on whether this is a "must" or a "feel good".

Hello Jim
Val and I are also in the process of our BT purchase with delivery end August.
We have the LC with IFS and the set up with the wheel is as Phil said. The offset on the alloy wheels means that spacer spiders have to be fitted to the rims on the BT then new wheels purchased. They are extremely expensive. We are getting our BT with 5 stud Landcruiser rims (17inch) and as I understand it and in an extreme emergency they will fit the cruiser but protrude beyond the mudguards. At least get you to town. The cruiser wheels will NOT fit the BT.
Regards
Col

Good point Ali - I have the same set up, but had forgotten that BT wheels will fit LC as you say, although I have not tried it.

Hello Jim,
I dont know if we have been lucky or someone in higher places was looking after us, in 6 years of travelling some very rough tracks & roads wehave not had a punture on either the LC or BT.

I think you have been lucky - we had 2 last year on a 6-week camping trip, including one blow-out on the Birdsville Track

We had 6 in one trip across the top end, all dead, not repairable.
Made a mess of the Budget

Three - just on the road into the East end of Carnarvon Gorge Jan 2000. Had to stop and use the NP&WS Rangers workshop as our compressor went bung as well! Not that many since - maybe 7 or 10! Then yesterday in the big smoke which meant a repair job this a.m. The new R&R Bead Breaker works a treat! Even on Split rims!
Cheers - Ian & Sally

Jim,
We have IFS cruiser and put spacers on but supplied own rims.Purchased rims from a tyre retailer, 6 for $60 which cut the price to about half .Everyone says extra 30 kg but how much does carrying an extra spare for the cruiser weight. If you want to put long range tank in you have to move spare tyre to a wheel carrier on the back anyway.Carry two spares for cruiser because van wheels won't fit (add weight of extra spare plus twin wheel carrier plus cost of twin wheel carrier)and my way of thinking 30kg for spacers isn't an issue I'm way ahead. Also have a long range tank for near the same cost and 3 interchangable tyres for van and cruiser. My way of thinking, the end decision is total up to each individual.

Are you talking about 16" rims all round?? Our problem is we have 17" on the cruiser as well as the IFS offset issue. Jim

Darrell and Jacki
If your ever wanting rims for the L/C and BT again just go to the Toyota dealer and they have heaps out the back they'll give them to you just to get rid of them.
I have 11 now. 5 for the truck and 6 for the van!!

With regard to the punctures, I have used the BT spares on the vehicle but only because it was easier to access them.
I wouldn't bother with the Duellers on the car unless you can get the australian ones. The ones on our van are doing the job well and we see more dirt than black top. I had a talk to a Bridgestone dealer in Canarvon and he suggested we get Australian made Duellers in preference to the Japanise ones when I told him about the lack of miles I was getting from my vehicles tyres.
I have since changed to Coopers on the tow vehicle and am very pleased.
