I have bought a 16 ft BT and would like to install a diesel heater before I go to the WA goldfields next winter .

It is a big job to install equipment like this in a van after manufacture ?

Can anybody tell me of a company that does this sort of work near Sydney ?

Thanks ,

Willie .

Willie,

I've heard of several people installing themselves. Aparantly the Webasto comes with some very good instructions.

I was going to do it myself and came across this a while back-

Site Link

If you were going past BT, I'd be getting them to do it. The do a neat job, also do something fancy with the muffler on the rear.....

Look to the left of the screen and you'll see a link to Webasto who sponser this site. No doubt they'd be able to help you out finding an installer in Sydney.

Cheers

Matt

Matt,

That looks like a very interesting document.

I copied it and put it in the swap file for the information of others later. When you look at the Webasto there doesn't seem to be a lot involved if you are a bit of a handy man and have the time to spare.

It would of couse be easier if Willie can find someone in his area who has a Webasto fitted and see how Bushtracker have done it in another van. After all Bushtracker just went from scratch when they installed the first one, and have probably improved since then. I know that mine was one of their earlier fit ups and they made the mistake of coiling up the Webasto cable which caused a hugh voltage drop and prevented operation when at 12.7 volts or below.

Matt ,

Thanks for that site link . Very good instructions , but maybe too big a job for a clutz like me . I have printed them out to give the installer anyway .

I cannot get up to the BT factory for this , so hopefully somebody will know of a good installer in Sydney .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Hi, went to the Webasto website. Pretty poor info. Nothing about installation etc.
If you find any more info could you please post it. I am also keen to get a good heater. One that preferably runs on diesel.

Thanks Kurt

Hi Kurt ,

I rang Wewbasto and asked them to name a good installer . They named one , who I rang . The discussion went a bit like this :

"You want to put it in a caravan ?
Yes
That's going to be difficult .
Why ?
Well we install them in ambulances and Winnebagos where we hook into the diesel line . If you put it in a van , where do we get the diesel ?
From a tank .
But Webasto don't sell a tank , so it would be expensive to have one made .
Oh . I will look into it and get back to you "

I went down to Barnes caravans who sell the Dometic diesel heater . This comes in a kit which includes a tank . Yes , now I am buying a Dometic .

Webasto need to make it a little easier or they will lose their market share.

Cheers ,

Willie

Willie,

Obviously the person you spoke to about installing the Webasto didn't know too much about the company's products. Bushtracker use a black poly tank of about 20 litres that I believe comes from Webasto.

For anyone else who would like information could I suggest that you contact Roger at Webasto on Email: roger@webasto.com.au
and I am sure he will be able to put you on the right track.

Hello Jigalong,

I have installed a Webasto in my Bushtracker, I covered the same ground as you and contacted Roger from Webasto who sent me the complete manual to order all the bits from, which included a fuel tank. Not having any idea of all the exact parts/bits that I would need I contacted Bushtracker and spoke to their workshop supervisor who was very happy to send me one of their complete kits. This included tank, fuel line, filter, ducting additional cable for the fuel pump etc. It included everything that I needed. From my memory the cost did not include any mark up other than freight to WA and it all arrived within a week. The installation was quite fiddly however the Webasto manual was very good and staight forward.

Regards
Roger
