Hi John,
Don't think you will find a "car contents" insurance policy. They don't exist.

Usually the car comprehensive policy only covers the vehicle with manufacturers FIXED equipment. You can then specify the extras you have added, like up-graded suspension, CB radio, reversing camera etc. This will be a market value policy.

However you may be able to arrange a special risks cover, ie Fire plus perils like explosion, impact by vehicles, water damage, malicious damage etc, and possibly theft following forcible entry to a locked vehicle.
There is also the possibility of getting accidental damage as an add on, althought the excess and additional cost may not be worth it. These covers will usually cover the items anywhere in Aust, not just whislt in the vehicle. Gives the flexability of moving the GPS from car to van for example and still having cover.

Usually you would need to specify the 'contents", ie, list them with a value. You may find an enlightened insurer who would give a blanket cover, say, $10,000 special risks on contents of the vehicle with a limit of say, $1000 per item unless specified separately.
Usually the cover would be for "market value", ie, new replacement value LESS DEPRECIATION. Try to get a replacement value policy, this avoids disputes on how much an item has "depreciated"..

Caravaners Complete Insurance, (a Shepperton Vic Insurance Broker who has a facility with Insurer CGU ) can offer a cover on the van, car, and, as you are a full time traveller, they can also provide an accidental damage cover on van contents.
You may be able to negotiate this to contents of Car and Van to give you what you are asking.
I recall it was a replacement value contents policy and is done by issuing a normal house contents policy which included lap-tops, cameras to a certain value without specification, and included PERSONAL liability insurance.
Personal liability covers your liability following an accident, not just PUBLIC liability in relation to the van.
So if your dog bit someone, or you spilt a billy of boiling water over a guest at your camp-fire, you would be covered.
Most Van insurance policies, if they provide "liability" cover, restrict it to an accident involving your property (the van) ie, someone injured whilst in or using the van. Beware, some have an ever more restricted liability cover.

Sorry I cannot give you a phone No for CCI, because we have just sold the house and move out tommorow morning to live back in Taj. All those insurance papers have been ""packed"" somewhere. All we have now is a phone and mattress on the floor. When you get on to CCI, speak with Marg or Jason. Both know their stuff in relation to caravans and the needs of full time travellers.

Although I spent 40 years in the industry with one of the two biggest brokers in Aust, I found that CCI provided a cheaper cost with lower excess than I could arrange "pulling strings" with my ex-employer to buy a "non-standard" policy with CGU, the same Insurer. (the replacement value "contents" of the van being "non-standard").
I should be able to get back on this site Tuesday for a couple of hours if you have any questions, after that, who knows when !!!!

Trust this helps.
Just remember, the most important thing is to have your insurance with a reputable insurer, and preferably with a specialist.
Cheers
Ian

PS, have just discovered 'somewhere', the CCI phone No. 1800 069 199

Ian,
Thanks, that was a very comprehensive answer and much appreciated. I will contact CCI and see what I can arrange.

The great thing about this BOG site is the huge resource of knowledge that one can tap into.

Thanks again

John
