100 series Landcruiser owners and others, do you use a rear window saver when towing your
Bushtracker or do you find that the screen on the front of the van saves the stones from bouncing onto the rear window.

I've got a polycarbonate window saver which velcros on the rear window. Last trip I didn't bother with it. Travelled about 3,500km on stony, dirt roads and had no problems. The screen on the BT works well

I have similar stoneshield on our camper trailer which has gone all over the centre etc Up north and down south. On the first trip I put thick card over the window but have not done anything since with no breakages (touch wood)
However, we were travelling through Diamontina Lakes a couple of years ago when my mate lost his back windscreen to staone from his trailer but we suspect it hit his spare which was not covered by the screen like a BT.
Cheers
Alan

Hi Cobber
When travelling in the rough stuff last year, we covered the rear windows of the Patrol with guards cut from thick clear plastic - like they sell at Spotlight. We stuck it on to the glass with self adhesive Velcro, but this did tend to come off the glass on very hot days. We didn't lose them; just stopped and pressed the Velcro back onto the glass when we noticed a tab had come loose. The guards may not have been necessary, but was a very cheap and simple precaution.

We are on our 2nd 100series pulling our B.T. over the last 4 years or so and have travelled the Gibb River Rd., the Plenty Highway and also into the Carnarvan Ranges from all directions plus many more "rather ordinary" Rd's and so far have had no problems with stone chips or broken glass to the rear of our vehicle during our travels.
That's not to say we haven't been lucky but the B.T. stone screen seems to have been working for us ------------ so far ?????
Anyway, there's more food for thought,
Cheers Judy & Tony

Howdy all - having lost a rear window from stone damage on the Birdsville Road (I REFUSE to call it a track!) when in our camping out of a trailer era, I have adopted Silver Foxes idea (see his photos) and used old shade cloth, with initially a "mulga" stick as a spreader spar and "Bungy chord" shock ties to the TOJO tow bar, and we had NO problems at all with stones, manouvering ar what ever as we traversed the Tanami Road, Gibb River Road, Neds Creek Road and ither less than ordinary unsealed roads.
Thank you Silver Fox!
The "extra bit" is now a bit neater with an aluminium tube spar and purpose made self adjusting shock rubber connectors to the tow bar! We intend to have it set up on all roads we travel in future.
Cheers - Ian & Sally

Hi All
Yes I have a stone shield that I attach to the each end of my tow bar.I made a rectangular frame made of light gauge square hollow section and covered it with shade clothe.I drilled and taped each end of the tow bar and bolted a small length of s.h.s (the next size up from the frame) to it.The frame slips into these two pieces and is held in place by a horizontal half inch pin. When not in use just pull the 2 pins out and lift the frame out.We have travelled 90,000klms and have no chips to the rear of our Toyota. You might be able to make out the frame, photo 22,25 in the picture section under Bob and Chris

Hi Cobber,
A few years ago we were travelling down the Oodnadatta track, past some roadworks in 2nd gear doing about 20kph and Bang! there goes the rear window!
Since then I have covered the rear window with that plastic corrugated stuff they make real estate and beer signs out of. Just cut it to shape then used duct tape to fix it on. The duct tape comes of the paint and glass no probs.
Just returned from a trip thru Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Lake Eyre, Oodnadatta track to Roxby Downs and have no problems.
However I have covered the "A" frame with 3mm chequer plate aluminium (to make safer to stand on and stop stones from hitting cross member that holds handbrake and other bits that are lower than the mesh stone guard, and so far no stone damage to rear of 100 series.
Hope this helps,
Max.
PS also put aluminium plate under the spare tyres, angled up behind mesh stone guard and down at rear under the van, this I covered with thin rubber. This works great as it stops the stones from blasting the front of the van.
