I have seen various posts on the web which suggest that you can currently receive the ABC/SBS channels on the new D1 satellite without the need for any encryption card at all (but I don't know whether these posts are actually accurate). Certainly the Lyngsat website suggests this is the case, as the usual 'Irdeto' is not entered against their channel details, rather 'F' for free. There are also many NZ channels listed.

As our Oyster system is 2 years old, it did not come preloaded with auto search for this newer satellite. After much research, I finally got the location details for D1 (see http://www.dishpointer.com/) but did not have much luck programming this into my Oyster satellite list.

Some of you with newer Oyster or Intellisat systems would have the Optus D1 pre-programmed - is it true that if you remove the Optus card, you can still get some free-to-air channels on this sat? (You would probably need to select D1 and do a channel search first)
