Does anyone have a way to get rid of ants in a BT.
We seem to have acquired several (?) resident colonies.
they are the small black type about 3mm long.
They only come out before rain but seem to appear all over the interior of the van

While being good weather predicters, we'd rather not have them in our walls or ceiling
we've tried the white baits that are s'posed to be taken back to the nest but it hasn't worked.

I had a similar big problem with those small black (smelly when crushed) ants. In fact they had a huge (read a black mass) colony under a mattress as well as in the toilet cassette cavity. I put drops of that 'Ant Kill' honey based with I think borax mix. It's in a little white plastic bottle. You can stick drops up on the ceiling if that is where their tracks are. I managed to eventually get rid of the nest in the ceiling cavity which was the resilient group. It took a year of baiting. The honey mix needs changing regularly and the dried off previous dose cleaned off. They don't always take to it straight away. However sometimes they get into it with gusto. I take a fiendish delight in that behaviour. good luck.

Mix up i tsp of borax, 1 teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of breadcrumbs. Put about on jam jar lids on ant tracks. They take the Borax back to the hive and it kills the Queen. End of problem

Hi Wilmo

I am interested in using your anticide at home. Do you leave the mix dry, or mix it with water to a paste or syrup? Is it harmful to pets? Like if the dog thinks "Yum, smells like toast and honey - breakfast time".

Thanks

Unless they are meat eaters - the meat eaters usually wont touch the sweet lures.
We have our house treated (green product) every few years and they gave us baits that can go outside or inside the van - these did the trick and no more trouble. I think the ants originally entered the van when we were up north. Because some of the little blighters can eat through cabling it is important to not neglect this problem.

Mr / Mrs Gypsy,

I had a little black ant problem in my van too. I purchased a plastic thingie ( like a plastic cockroach bait thingie ) at the supermarket and the problem was solved very quickly.

Apparently there is meat ants and Buddist ants. Each require their own specific type of bait.

I believe that you leave it dry
I always have and it has seemed to work.
The sugar and the breadcrumbs tempt them to take the lot back to the hive.

We used the baits that come in white plastic, surface spray and some Ant Rid and it eventually got rid of them.

I think if we get the problem again I would get a Pest Control company come and give it a good surface spray job with their more powerful mixtures.

We recently had them in the house in their thousands and while the supermarket surface sprays did a good job the Pest Controller mixture wiped them out quickly.
