Howdy all, well we went and dun it!
Another three months of Long Service Leave put to good use in a really good rig! The BT is just superb!
11th July to 30th September saw us take in the following.
Stage 1 - Adelaide - Riverland, Wentworth, Broken Hill, Milparinka, Tibooburra, Noccundra, Eromanga, Charleville.
Stage 2 - Tambo, Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach, Winton, Combo WH, Richmond, Hughenden, Townsville, Cairns.
Stage 3 - Mareeba, Lakeland, Weipa, Bramwell Junction, Heathlands NP, Twin / Eliot falls, Siesia. Roughest roads we have EVER experienced! But just took it easy with about 25 - 28 psi in all tyres.
Stage 4 - the Cape region
Stage 5 - Siesia, Chilli Beach, Cooktown, Cairns.
Stage 6 - Mareeba, Chillagoe, Undara, Einasleigh, Forsayth, Cobbold Gorge, Georgetown, Normanton, Karumba.
Stage 7 - Burketown, Edels Grove, Lawn Hill, Riversleigh, Mt isa.
Stage 8 - Boulia, Diamantina NP, Bedourie, Birdsville, Mungerannie, Lynhurst, Hawker, Druids Range, Napperby, home.
Just too many highlights to write up here - will try to select a few pics to post later.
12000 k, averaged 4.75 KpL average diesel price over full trip $1.44/ L
Had a BALL and opened the eyes of some "hard core 4WD" folk at just where we could get the BT and how easily we did it!
Looking forward to retirement now - just 4 years to go!
Cheers - Ian & Sally

Ian
Did you have to pre book any parks in Siesia, Karumba, Normanton or Burketown?

Hello Robbo,
In short for Normanton, Karumba and Burketown - No!

Reasonings being that the hot period set in about a month early and the southerners all packed up and left VERY quickly. So much so that the parks etc were caught by surprise! Well thats what they told us!
We were ready to camp just out of town if need be until a spot came up, but we simply rolled in and saw the Normaton, Sunset Park at Karumba and the Burketown van park all at least with 50% free spots.

Siesia was a bit different as we were there in the peak season still. Even so we decided to 'take pot luck' at Siesia and got a lovely spot under palm trees (one of Sally's long time wishes) with beach view, between two of the 'huts' and ran power from one of the huts. Lovely clean sand under foot and van as well. Quite a few of the contacts we made whilst travelling had tried Punsand Bay and Loyalty Beach and were LESS than impressed with both!

The so called resort up near the cape itself is merely a 'ruin' as the 'owners' simply walked out and left it for whom ever to do whatever and so it really is not even worth taking the rig to! Cant camp there anyway (at least not legally).

We day tripped to where ever from Siesia.

B.T.W. the Siesia wharf was a great fishing spot - 106cm, 21lb Spanish Mackerel on a 20lb outfit! Tastes delicious too!

Cheers
