After receiving the Explore Oz newsletter I was having a look at the SPOT GPS Satellite tracking and message device.
I was just wondering if anyone has gone down this track and what members opinions are of this product that would allow you to call for help via satellite from any location, notify family that you are OK or allow family and friends to follow your route.
The units costs $250 after cash back, and requires a $115 US annual fee plus an Additional $50 US for the tracking feature.
The Johnny Appleseed web site shows details of the unit.

Hi Brian
I believe that ExplorOz is trialling their own tracking device and all you need is an GPS mobile phone that sends your location to googlemaps. I would check with David to find out more. There is no indication of fees etc at this time. Hope this provides another alternative.

Brian,
I looked into the SPOT system and decided not to proceed because I believe the system is "one-way" i.e. when you hit the button to send a location or emergency request you do not get a confirmation; and if it was a life risk situation I would prefer a reliable sat-phone service - I can talk to people re the issues.
cheers
