We have recently been stranded at Drysdale River Station due to the failure of a power steering hose on our vehicle - the hose runs from the pump to the steering box & also acts as a cooler. Cause of failure was the bracket that holds the hose against the chassis failing. Vehicle has 100k+ up and according to the staff at Drysdale is the 3rd vehicle this year to suffer the same fate.
Would pay owners to check regularly as failure is extremely expensive and we were so lucky that RACQ paid our Tilt-tray costs of $3000

Is there any chance of a photo of the hose and bracket, so we can identify and modify if needed.

Hi there,

With 100km + up, is your 200 series a 2007 or 2008 model?

Having just taken delivery of a new one last week, we mentioned your post to the dealer.

They checked their service instructions from Toyota HO for any abnormals showing up post-production, out on the road, on a regular basis. Nothing for the steering hose came up, and the matter was dismissed with the comment "must have been an early model 200 series" .

My thinking is, "So what? If now is when the problem is showing up, and it's a weakness in certain year/models, now is when Toyota HO should be flagging service departments to watch out for it..............of course it does rely on feedback from service agents, maybe that's the weak link in the chain?

Cheers, Deb

S&D [how are ya]

Your last comment is exactly my thinking and with our experience with our recent cracked tow bar experience, nothing came up on the Toyo computer nor knew about by the counter service staff, ........ but it has happened enough times for it to be alerted to each dealer.

I wonder if the weak link is intentional or not .... $$$$$$$

Yes Nik'n'Off, it seems to be the $$$$$$. When we had what's turned out to be a common problem with our Prado D4D injector knock, our local Tojo dealer had the effrontery to deny any knowledge of it! Laughable. We don't own the vehicle anymore. They're not a bad vehicle, we've owned 7 (6 Landcruisers), but some of the dealerships I frequent lately, have become pretty hard in their attitude.

We have just experienced the same problem on a 2009 200 series GXL with 50,000 kms on the clock. Fortunately after coming from Fitzroy Crossing up the Gibb River Road, including detours to Mt Hart, Mornington Wilderness, Elizabeth Station and Mitchell Plateau the hose did not fail until we got to Kununurra and at this stage refilling the reservoir with fluid has kept the vehicle drivable until the pressure hose arrives. It does seem to be a developing problem as a result of continued driving on rough outback roads. For us the repairs are under warranty. The Toyota dealer in Kununurra did not seem surprised by the problem and said they had at least two others in the recent past.
