We are now at Carnarvon and and it is hard to find totally free camping spots along the road.
We are heading to Broome, The Bungles and GRR.
There are some beautiful places to stay, but they are either Nat Parks or Reserves and they all want thier share of my money.
Sometimes you have no choice but to stay in a Caravan Park if you want to see that particular town or area, I can understand that.
Camps 5 is not as good as it looks when you get right into it.
So, can you guys out there, that have done it all before me please help me out with some free locations for camping.
Chris.

hi chris. earley this year margaret and i stayed at the 40 mile beach, about 50 kilometres south of karratha. a great crab and fishing spot ,there is a caretaker on site, and it cost us $7.00 a night per van. there are a few sand flys, but not as bad as further north. there was a bit of noise from the guys building the gas platform, so if you stay just move around the point a bit. there is a dump point, and a portable toilet. no water or electric. regards. ken & margaret brown

Chris,

We are on our way to Kunnanurra from Litchfield so we will keep our eyes and ears open along the Gibb.

There will be 3 BT's in our group so will be easy to spot.

Cheers.

Hi Chris

The Jan Holland Priceless Campsites and Rest Areas series (WA and NT only) is way in front of Camps 5 for ideas and details. These books were my tour guide last year and the year before for WA and NT as they also have the best tourism info.

We usually find our own spots without any difficulties, particularly in WA (eg old roads, gravel pits, tracks alongside rivers and the like). If we don't and time is getting on, we use the books as back up. A couple of times last year we said "thanks Jan Holland" from a spot we wouldn't have found with her books.

A few dollars for National Park camping in a good location is as good as free camping to me.

Chris:
Some areas worth visiting along the way are as follows:
Blowholes. 24kms North of Carnarvon, turn left and travel 47kms to Blowholes. Suitable for big rigs. toilets-bbqs etc. Ranger on site. Small fees apply. Great fishing area.

Ningaloo Homestead: situated on Exmouth Road South of the Coral Bay turnoff. Turn left off the Exmouth road and travel 34kms to homestead on reasonable gravel road. Fees apply, great snorkelling and fishing area. NikNoff (Vickie and Mick) stayed there recently and he continually reckons "it is hard living there"??

If you want to get ripped off, go to Exmouth and the procedure for staying at the national parks areas is unvelievably difficult and priced through the roof by CALM. Recommend you do not stay at the Ningaloo Tourist Resort Caravan Park (First on the left as you enter Exmouth ) as the facilities and management are extremely undesireable. (Dogs wander and bark all night, drunks wandering into your annexes, fighting and brawls, not hot showers, sewer systems blocked and running through the showers etc etc)

Warrora Station: The 14 Mile Beach Camp Area -83kms North of the Manilya Roadhouse off the Exmouth road. Turn left and travel 11kms on sandy dirt road. Good beach camping, fishing etc. Fees through station are pretty good.

Cape Keraudren: Situated 147kms North of Port Hedland just prior to Pardoo Roadhouse. (Signposted) . Turn left and Travel 8kms on gravel road. Ranger on site: Toilets etc. No water or wood. Great camp area on the headland cliffs overlooking the bay. Small fees apply- Some stay there 3-4 months. Good fishing.

Cleaverville Beach: About 6kms South of Roebourne.(Signposted) Go in about 14kms on gravel road-hit the t-junction and you turn left or right and go into the beach/dune areas tracks that run along the beaches and pick a site. Better beach areas (if you can all them that) to the right. Camp manager comes around and collects $7-00 per night . Water and wood must be brought in. Water can be obtained from Roebourne or Karratha Tourist Bureau on the way in.

Hope this helps. If you ask NikNoff- he will let you know how good Gningaloo homestead is/was as he sends me photos of the fish "Vicky' catches. Have not seen any that he has caught yet???

Regards

G'day Chris,

I've moved this subject to the Members Forum so we don't let out too many secrets on where and how to find free camp spots.
