Shocks and tyrs for F250

G'day all,

I need a new set of shocks for the Effie. I thought I might get a set of Rancho's. My thought was centred around American vehicle, use American shocks. However, I had a small town mechanic inform me that they are rubbish for Australian conditions, particularly when towing a caravan the weight of the B.T. After his very strong comments I then enquired of him what brand would be suitable for the weight of the Effie and the B.T. he was unable to help, which has left me in a bit of a quandary.

So all you Effie and Chev owners, particularly those who are at their weight limits, what is the best for the job ??????????

Also, while we are at it, could any of you suggest a decent tyre for the Effie for all the same reasons of weight problems. I have had a slow leak in one of my rear tyres 285/70R 16 Cooper All Terrain's, with only 7000 kms on them. I had it checked at Ingham to find that the inside bead of both rear tyres have broken the rubber down to the metal, absolutely destroyed. By sheer chance, or bad luck, which ever way you want to look at it, the Cooper Rep for the far north Queensland was in Ingham at the time and before he would consider a warranty claim on the tyres, he insisted that we get the Effie weighed. He paid the $25 for the pleasure and I/we find that the Effie weighed in at 5.3 tonnes, 3 tonne over the rear axle. So, I don't have to go on any further, the warranty claim was rejected and I'm up for another set of tyres. I'm heading home to dislodge a tonne or so.

I will appreciate all and any comments, please. However, ALL I TOLD YOU SO'S, ARE NOT HELPFUL !!!!!!!!!!

I had a similar problem.
Delaminated a Mickey Thompson and then a Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour, both on the rear of my overweight F250. (4800 Kg)
Coopers, the agent for MT did not want to know me, Beaurepairs replaced the Goodyear and suggested I run the load bearing tyres at the recommended pressure of 55 PSI.
I have just returned from a dirt road trip from Alice to Cape York without a problem.
F250 front Goodyears 45 PSI, rear 55 PSI, caravan, all Goodyears, 32 PSI.
Beaurepairs, of whom I have no commercial connections, offer an excellent warranty against punctures and any other damage for $12 extra per tyre.

I put the OME suspension on mine plus airbags on the rear
Overall 50mm lift.
Fitted 295 x 75 x16 BFG AT's

This has been an excellent combination.Just glides over corrugations, lumps and bumps.

I have modified a few vehicles now and its seems to me that the two keys to this are matching shockers to springs and matching the suspension to the kind of driving you intend to do.

All good advice, still not sure what I'm going to do. It currently has OME, front and rear with about 60 to 70k on them. The front springs are OME and the rear started off as OME but I had tyo take it Carrols Springs in Brisbane to be beefed up a bit because the previous owner had the secondary springs removed and had fitted the bellows type air bags. To get it level with the B.T. on the rear, I had to have 60 to 70 p.s.i. in them. It was far too harsh on the B.T. and eventually broken the 'A' frame off the chassis. $1200 later we are back on the road.
