Mr Sweedy
I am thinking of driving from Exmouth to Alice Springs in April/May and am after advice on the best route to take (Telfer Mine Road? Talawana Track?). I will be towing a 20' BT with a 100 series Landcruiser. I'm after the easiest drive across rather than looking for any big 4WD challenges.
Please provide any info on fuel availability, water availability, general road conditions (I'm aware these are changeable) etc. Also any other tips or info or must see points along the way.
Thanks for any advice.

Can't help you, but I would like to know how you went when you make the trip.

hi. my wife margaret and i,did this trip in august/september of this year. we came up the coast highway, from perth to port headland. where we turned off,to go down to newman/mt magnet. then across to leonora, laverton. all this is very easy bitumen. we obtained permits from the wa/nt aboriginal councils,to use the great central rd,1600kilometres of dirt to ayres rock, ( the last 100 kilometres at dockers river is very rough). we had no trouble getting water, from any of the info centres,as you come into laverton there is a big water tower, where you can fill everything before you start up the dirt. we bush camped all the way,and i think it has been one of our best trips. if you need anymore advice on spots to see, send me a pm. kind regards. ken & margaret brown.Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

Hi Mr Sweedy
We haven't been down the Talawana track, but the Gary Junction road from Marble Bar is a lovely and easy drive. This is generally much less corrugated than the Great Central Road due to less traffic. I'm not sure if i have put the trip note in the documents section yet, but there are probably several reports here of the same route.
Fuel at Kunawarritji ($3.20 - the most expensive), at Kiwirrkurra and Kintore and Papunya. Check opening hours first. We carried adequate water for the trip, but there are places to obtain water along the way, including the very pleasant Jupiter Well camp.

I have just put two lots of trip notes up, which only takes us as far as Kintore, with the very scenic drive to Alice Springs yet to come.
Lots of Len Beadell markers along this route if you are a Len fan.

G'day Mr Sweedy
We travelled from Marble Bar to Alice 4 weeks ago and details are posted on the other BT
Forum (

Thanks so much for the responses everybody. It sounds like a great route across and one we'll potentially be doing later in the year. A bit of a changed situation now, so perhaps we'll be heading down to Alice from further north.
