I would like to do a 4-6 week trip in the Victorian High Country, leaving from Qld in early feb and finish up at the Neil Diamond Concert at the vineyard west of newcastle, in mid March, so what are the must see's , must do,s . I hope this is a good time of year to go, as i belive most of the roads close down from winter to xmas,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Frank.
I have just written a long winded reply but was booted out by the system when I went to submit it. Anyway maybe I can redo it.
You are right about the gates being closed. They open on the weekend before the Melbourne Cup and close at the Queens Birthday Weekend. Note that Mt Stirling gates do not open until the first of December.
Must sees. Craigs Hut, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo, Walhalla. There are many many more places to see.
Remember that it is not called the HIGH Country for nothing and to get there you have to wind up roads with some sharp bends.
We accidently went to Suggan Buggan. DONT. It is good camping but the road is narrow, winding with shear drops, no guard rails and no way to pass a car coming the other way.
We travelled the Black Mountain Road and there is a marvellous camp ground at Native Dog Flat.
There are good maps of the area. I cannot remember the names but will pass it on when I can find them. There are also good "Rooftop" maps of the area. I bought a book called "The High Country 4WD and Camping by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage and also a video "Over the Top Victorian High Country" see www.lifestylevideos.com.au
Hope all of this helps
Regards
Col

Frank,
Like Col, we have also been on the road to Suggan Buggan after ignoring the signs that stated " Not suitable for caravans", my wife was on the side with the drop and not very happy about it, but once committed we had to carry on, don't make the same mistake that we did.
The Omeo Hwy from Tallangatta to Omeo has some nice camping spots along it, and although I haven't been along it for a few years, the Great Alpine Rd from Omeo across Mt Hotham to Bright is well worth the trip.

Paul.

G'day Frank
Great area to explore, just be prepared for any weather from snow, rain or 40 deg.
The last time we visited we ended up stuck in the snow at Bluff Hut and it was February! The Tamboritha Rd from Licola will take you up to the Howitt High Plains where you could set up a base camp and do some side trips to Wonnangatta Homestead, King Billy No.1 and if you get a chance check out Mt Wellington via the Moroka Rd. There are many 4wd tracks in the area and some are quite demanding, so if you are travelling by yourself be careful where you choose to go. The Caledonia River, Dingo Hill Track is very rough.
Regards
Jeff

Hello Frank.
Found those maps of the high country.
Hema have a good one called "High Country Victoria". www.hemamaps.com.au This is a good map but I liked a map put out by Spatial Vision Map called "Touring the Victorian Alps". Check out www.spatialvision.com.au
Good luck.
It is a great place to visit.
