Returning home from a short trip, the thetford toilet C2 started to leak slightly over the shower floor. The van is 5 years old but the holding tank was only 12 months old. At home, after cleaning the tank, I stood it up in a vertical position and COMPLETELY filled it with water and stood by to detect the leak. NO leak ??

I then pressed in the pressure relief valve ( which is automatically activated when the tank is slid into its housing ) and water started to dribble out of the valve, which it shouldn't as only gases should be expelled. The first pumps of the button had tiny particals of paper in the water and after a dozen pumps, the water became cleaner and finally stopped leaking. So all is good now so if this happens to you, check this fix.

Good tip - thanks.

It is also worth carrying a spare shut off plate - the round plastic disk that opens and closes the top access as you operate the handle.

These are the only failures I have had (3 or 4 times in 5 years) - the screw housing that attaches them breaks open. Only a 5 mins job to replace and the spare part costs about $35:00

The Thedford website also has very good maintenance page with lots of photos etc.

Hi John,
When my shut off plate failed to seal with enough up pressure I tried to purchase a new one but was told (twice) by Thetford Aust. that it was not sold as a spare part and that my only option was to buy a complete holding tank, which I did. So, where did you buy your spares from..

I was offerred one by a Thetford Agent in Mackay recently. I actually bought the whole removable top section which is the whole mechanism ffor about $70.00. I suggest you try some caravan shops as they obviously supply them as warranty parts for the service people.

I was led to understand that the warranty on these mechanisms was three years - if yours is less than that then try a warranty claim.
