I recently downloaded the latest update for my iPhone 4 a mere 670Mb and it now has what is termed "PERSONAL HOTSPOT' feature.
With this the iPhone acts in the same manner as the likes of McDonald's where you can log into the internet on your laptop using a WiFi signal from your mobile. So if you have a reasonable data download plan on your iPhone you can use that as your modem and save having to have an additional USB wireless modem.

Brian, that's interesting.
I have just had a brief look here:
Site Link
and it appears that this feature allows you to use your mobile as a modem without connecting via the normal USB cable that the Iphone uses. You can also connect more than one device to the net via the Iphone.
Of course, you will know all that, just explaining for the benefit of others.
Do you know if it disables "tethering" via the cable or can it do both?
Would be a handy feature for 2 latops and only one phone, or one phone with a larger data allowance than the other.
Telstra data packages are getting cheaper all the time too.
