Hi all. Just needing a few opinions on these highways. We are planning to travel from Hervey Bay to Tamworth in April 2012. Are these highways the ones that most everyone would take their BT on or are the smaller lesser roads the best way to travel hassle free? (We are aware that the Newell is known for heavy truck traffic)
Cheers, Jan O

Hi Jan
It all depends on how much time you have and whether you just want to get to Tamworth or you want to have a scenic type of trip.
If it were us we would take this route
Beaudesert, Urbanville, Benalbo, Tabulam, Alice (good camp spot and use the road on the west of Tabulam), Clarence way( good dirt road) / Rogan bridge road to Sth Grafton.
Namboida, Wollomombi, Armadale and if you still want to avoid the hway Walcha, Thunderbolts way to Tuggolo forrest and turn west on topdale / post office road to Dungowan (good little cafe craft shop) and on to Tamworth.

I agree with MH re the New England, but from Hervey Bay I would turn off the Bruce south of Bauple and go through Woolooga to the Wide Bay Hwy and on to Goomeri, Yarraman then turn west to Cooyar (good free camp at the Swinging Bridge) then on to Warwick and the New England.

If you didn't wish to go through Toowoomba I would not turn at Yarraman and go onto Esk then head west again via Gatton and Heifer creek (another good freebie) and join the New England between Toowoomba and Warwick.

All good roads IMO

Great to see you made it 'over east'.

We HATE the Newell Hgy with a passion and try to find the routes less travelled.

If we are wanting a quick(ish) trip south we always choose the New England Hgy there are heaps of freebies, loads of National Parks to walk or stay in. Very scenic/picturesque.

Cheers

There is an alternative road (bitumen) which has less traffic and less hills.

Gatton, Heifer creek road to Clifton, Inglewood, Texas, Warialda, Bingara, Barraba, Tamworth.

Free camps include Heifer Creek, Texas, Bingara,

Travel safe

We skipped Toowoomba by going from Oakey to Pittsworth (pretty country), Nobby and Clifton to Warwick. Alan's suggestion sounds good too.

Hi Jan O
I Agree with Allan's post and can confirm that the camps at Texas and Bingarra are excellent. A very easy road to travel.

Any route that involves a stay in front of Rudd's Pub at Nobby, has to be the best way.

Great campsite:

WOW!! Thankyou all who replied...another reason why I asked here...I was sure of some good advice. Allan and Sharron we aren't there yet....still in Newman but this is the long planned move over there!! Ironic that Bobrovin's advice included Dungowan at the end....this is our new address!!!! Once again thanks for all the advice, it is being added to the file for when we need it. Cheers from Jan O

Hi Jan & Easy,

When you get to Tamworth let us know where you are as we will be going North next year and would like to say hello and share a drink again.
