Hi All
Please excuse my female ignorance but can anyone advise how I can upgrade the GVM on my BT. Presently it is rated at 3000 & when recently weighed it was 3600 ... There's not much left I can chuck out as this is my home... Tow vehicle is rated to tow 3800 so I thought maybe there is a way to obtain a BT upgrade to match. would appreciate any ideas apart from return to BT. Other difficulty is that I am currently located in the Isa for 3/12 so accessing varied expertise may be limited.
Thanks in anticipation

You would more than likely have to contact the BT factory.

The ease of having an upgrade done would depend on a number of things, least of all what load rating the suspension is and the load rating of the hitch.

I know that the factory can do it quite easily providing the right gear for the upgrade is on the van.

When I enquired casually a few months ago about upgrading our 3.5t 21' 2012 van given that our new Ram can tow so much more, I understood Steve to say that they could take it to 4000 kg relatively easily by changing the hitch, chains and the bracing on the A frame. Taking it to 4500 kg (max towing in Oz on electric brakes) would need a brake upgrade. But it depends on what's already on your van, of course. But I haven't looked into it closely because we're in WA and not planning to be passing Kunda Park for some years.

I had my 3t up graded to 3.5t. If you get the serial number of the simplicity suspension system, then give Richard a call at Simplicity Suspension, he will tell you what rating the suspension is. It may be a 3.5t unit that just needs paperwork to upgrade. Or like mine you may need to rip the old suspension off and have complete new suspension welded back on. If so Richard can point you to your nearest agent that can do this. You will also need to find out from the state motor registry that your van is registered in what paperwork will be needed to have the rego documents reflect the new GVM.

In addition to brakes you need (to be legal) to check your hitch (car end and van end) and chains. On my casual inquiry, BT said it would be easy, but necessary, to replace the hitch and chains to take me from 3500kg to 4000kg.

At the car end, I noticed that a drop hitch I bought in an auto store was rated at only 2500kg. Fine to haul a box trailer which is all I wanted it for, but something to keep an eye on.
