Information
Southern boundary of the Heathlands Nature Reserve and Jardine River National Park. From this point heading north along the OTT you are in protected zones where certain restrictions apply. Please check these conditions and how they apply to you, especially in relation to the use of generators, where you are permitted to camp, where you may have open camp fires etc.
National parks, conservation parks and resources reserves of Cape York Peninsula are managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service together with Traditional Owners under Indigenous Management Agreements.
In particular, be aware that camping permits are now required and fees apply. Self registration at camp sites is no longer possible and bookings must be made in advance where you will be issued an e-permit.
See www.qld.gov.au/camping or phone 13 74 68. Ranger bases at Lakefield, Iron Range, and Heathlands and QPWS offices in Coen, Cooktown and Weipa offer computerised booking facilities open 24/7. Fishing restrictions also apply at some sites so it is important that you check details carefully.
Within the reserves, you may use UHF Channel 5 for emergencies to contact the Dept of Community Safety. Park alerts are available online from www.nprsr.qld.gov.au
