HISTORY
Mount Palmer Goldmine (1934–1944)
In late 1934, prospector Augustus Palmer discovered gold south of Yellowdine, sparking a gold rush that led to the establishment of the Mount Palmer goldmine. A 20-head battery was built in 1935, and by 1937, 130 men were employed. The rapidly growing town featured hessian and tin buildings, businesses, boarding houses, and gambling saloons. Land once worthless fetched nearly £4,000 in auctions. At its peak, Mount Palmer had around 500 residents.World War II drained the workforce, and by 1943 the town was nearly deserted. The mine closed in June 1944 after producing an official 4,928 kg of gold from 310,728 tons of ore—though unofficial figures were higher.Today, little remains. The once-famous hotel is gone, its bricks reused in Kalgoorlie’s Bankwest building. Concrete remnants and mining structures are still visible, but entry to the active tenement is restricted for safety.
