Information
Tasmania has many sea cliffs made of dolerite, often in the form of columns. However the Bicheno Blowhole is made of granite. The ocean has beaten against the granite for thousands of years, carving out a sea cave from a joint on the rock The waves in assaulting the cave’s interior, located a weak area in the ceiling and ripped a hole in the granite. Now, water rushes into the cave, splatters against the walls and erupts out the ceiling hole. For those standing at the side of the sea cave, this provides a geyser effect.
With each surge of the ocean, the geyser bursts with changing force, and the water takes on new shapes. Even when the sea is calm, it can blow with enormous force, so never turn your back on the blowhole. When the ocean is angry, though, the most spectacular and dangerous eruptions occur.
