Moreton Telegraph Station - QLD

The Moreton Telegraph Office was once part of the Overland Telegraph Line. Built like a fort in 1887, it was deliberately built near water (Wenlock River) with water tanks inside the station to protect them from hostile Aboriginal people. The single wire electric telegraph served Australia well for almost 60 years until the outbreak of World War 2. Better communications were required in the face of the threat to the northern Qld coastline where cross-arms and an additional 4 lines were added to the existing poles. This line was operational until 1987 when the Overland Telegraph Line was closed.

Today, Moreton Telegraph Station operates as a tourism business, offering accommodation, local tours and stories of the old days. Today's visitors can enjoy camping on spacious and shady cleared areas along the banks of the Wenlock river. Bring your own camping gear, or book safari tents. Pet friendly. Powered sites available (from generator not 24 hour).

A pleasant 2km stroll to the Barra Hole in the Wenlock, then another 1km to loop over to Cave Creek and back to camp via the lagoon. Obtain a mud map from the office.

Over 121 bird species have been noted in the Moreton vicinity. Palm Cockatoo and Magnificent Riflebird may be regularly observed here. Other wildlife known to inhabit this area include Agile Wallabies, Antilopine Wallaroo & Common Spotted Cuscus.
