Level Post Bay - SA

Level Post Bay was named by Warren Bonython in 1949 when he used a "level post" to monitor water levels in the "great flood of 1949 - 50". At a point in Madigan Gulf some 40 km offshore the lake bed is 15.2 m below sea level. During 1974 – 75 flood a water depth of 6.6m was recorded.

The Level Post Bay Track has been a popular PAR (public access route) enabling visitors to drive to this point. However it was closed to the public due to a dispute over the grading of the track.

The water depth in Madigan Gulf has not exceeded 2m since 1989 and needs to be at 1.5m to be visible from Level Post Bay as above picture shows in 2011 when it was a long walk out to it. At Halligan Bay water is seen every year or two and is much closer to the campsite. Other bays and inlets have no public access on land nor water and can only be seen from the air.
