Information
Sighted distantly by explorers David Lindsay in 1891, Hugh Russel in 1897 and R.T. Maurice in 1901, but not named by them. The explorer Frank Hann took sights to this range on 27th Oct. 1903, naming it the "Eveline Livesey Range", no doubt after Miss Eveline Livesey, a Shorthand Clerk in the Lands Department. (Hann's Journal W.A.A. 1114/17Item no.312 - Miss Livesey's appointment gazetted on 25 July 1902 page 3079) shown as Livesey Range on Exp. Roll Plan 105, drawn from Hann's notes. Hann appears to have been the first to visit and examine this range on 10 June 1906, describing it as a "Miserable Range, sand hills all around". (Hann's Journal W.A.A. 1114/17 item no. 315). Note:- in a letter to the Surveyor General dated June 7th 1907, Hann asks to be remembered to Miss Livesey, then sends kindest regards to Miss Livesey on 22nd September 1907.
Livesey Range was the subject of an attempted gold mining scam instigated by Patrick "Paddy" Whelan in June/July 1932. The report's of the finds at that time drew comparrisons with Lassiters lost reef further promoting excitement around the 'discovery'. The claims of Whelan and his cohorts were soon debunked when another explorer/prospector by the name of H. B. Lugg returned to civilisation, he had recently checked Whelan's find on the ground and in detail, "He was emphatic that there was nothing at the Livesey Range looking anything like a reef", undaunted the West Centralian Co. started operations from the Warburton Ranges on the 25th of November, under the keen eye of Michael Terry who made some trenchant observations about the Company and Coote in particular, and added that Whelan's find was a lot of nonsense.
