Mogumber is a small country town on the Bindoon - Moora Road about 130km north of Perth. The town is situated on the Moore River East, within the Shire of Victoria Plains.
HISTORY: Established in 1918 by the government of Western Australia, The Moore River Native Settlement was where Aboriginal children of all ages from all over the State were placed by parents, child welfare authorities or the Children's Court. In 1951, the government transferred management to the Methodist Overseas Mission who opened Mogumber on the same site which operated from 1951 through to 1974. In the 1970s, some children were moved from Mogumber to houses in Perth.
Doris Garimara Pilkington’s 2002 book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence was based on her mother’s and aunt’s experiences being taken away to Moore River Native Settlement in 1931. They escaped and walked back to their home at Jigalong in the north-west of Western Australia, 2,400km away. The book was made into a film: Rabbit Proof Fence.
The Mogumber Outback Club runs the annual New Year's Eve Mogumber Rodeo on the 31st December each year attracting the best of the regions Bull Riders, Barrel Racers, Steer Wrestlers, and includes licensed bar, Food and Show rides. It is a a family-friendly event attracting up to 2000 visitors.
