Information
Black Point is famous for its massive hexagonal basalt columns, created by ancient lava that cracked into geometric pillars as it cooled. These dark, stone structures dominate the coastline and stand in dramatic contrast to the white sand and blue ocean. They are some of the most impressive natural rock formations in Western Australia, shaped by millions of years of crashing Southern Ocean waves.A short walk west from the main headland leads to the Organ Pipes. These pillars are stacked so tightly they look like a giant musical instrument. To hear them "play," visit on a calm day with a light breeze. As air and wind move through the narrow gaps between the stone columns, they produce a low, melodic humming or whistling sound that mimics the pipes of a cathedral organ.Reaching this remote spot requires a high-clearance 4WD, as the tracks are deep sand and require lowering your tyre pressure to avoid getting stuck. The road is usually closed during winter (June to October) due to flooding, so it is best visited in the drier months. Once you park, it is a roughly 1km walk along the beach to see the pipes, though you must stay well back from the water to avoid unpredictable king waves.Excellent rock fishing, although can be dangerous if a big swell is running.Black Point is approximately 2½ hours from Augusta. Access to Black Point is 4WD only. Be sure to reduce your tyre pressure to 10psi as you begin driving on sand. Black Point Road is closed in winter.See separate listings for National Park campsites nearby that need booking online - Seal Cove & Humpback Hollow. Use link provided.
