Caranbirini is a remarkable reserve containing a number of different habitats, including woodland, riverine, and wetland. The 1200 hectare reserve has both sub-tropical and semi-arid regions. It is reached via the Carpentaria Highway, 46 km south of Borroloola, with the carpark just 400 m from the highway.
The semi-permanent waterhole is a refuge for the Gouldian Finch, Borroloola Gecko, Brolgas, Jabirus and many other birds and animals. The cooler early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to use the bird hide to watch for the native inhabitants. There are three walking trails ranging from 150 m up to 3 km.
Best time of year to visit is between May and October. The 2WD gravel access road is open all year round. The gate at the entrance is not locked. For further information phone the Borroloola Ranger Station or use the web:
