Information
Wave Rock attracts an amazing 130,000 visitors per year, which is incredible given it is more than 330km from Perth and is located on the outskirts of Hyden, a tiny West Australian township that was only connected to the main electricity line in the 1990s.
Wave Rock is a granite cliff about 15 metres high and 110 metres long. The distinctive wave shape has been caused by thousands of years of erosion, which has undercut the base and left an overhang. Black algae live on the bare rock where enough water runs off the top and down the sides. This is uneven so produces the distinctive stripes. Wave Rock is a very well-known landform that is much photographed by the thousands of tourists that visit each year.
Well sign-posted from the Hyden-Norseman Rd, visitors can easily drive in 2WD vehicles to the carpark at the walk trail heads. Parking fees apply per vehicle. Bike and bus passengers free aswell. Nearby kiosk, toilets, hotel, and camping grounds cater for visitors needs.
From the Wave Rock trail head, visitors can also walk to other intriguing rock formations in the area including the Hippos Yawn, the Humps, and "Mulka’s Cave".
