Information
This rest area allows short stay overnight camping. Please obey signs. Max stay 20 hours. Campaspe River Rest Area is 90km west of Charters Towers. Recent travellers report this area is clean and level with flushing toilets and rubbish bins, shady trees, picnic tables and a shelter. Abundant birdlife. Right on the Flinders Highway.Located right beside the western bridge over the river it s an easily accessible, large flat area positioned right off the highway tarmac. The site is a ribbon-like outback oasis defined by a spectacular riparian ecosystem that slices through the region's dry, undeveloped woodlands. The absolute highlight of this site is its striking, mature canopy of River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis). These ancient timber giants line the alluvial banks, casting immense shade over the red-dirt clearing and throwing out deep nesting hollows that draw in a massive variety of local birdlife and tree-dwelling fauna. The immediate river ecosystem relies on extreme ephemeral dynamics. Depending on the time of year you pull in, you will see a rapid transition from parched, drought-tolerant outback grasses to dense, vibrant clusters of flood-reliant reeds and sedges clinging to the watercourse. This narrow green zone behaves as a critical wildlife corridor, providing a crucial water and foraging sanctuary for native outback birds, frogs, and reptiles in a mostly arid landscape.Be aware that because it sits tight between the Flinders Highway and the regional rail line running directly behind the clearing, the immediate micro-ecology is sensitive to road runoff and edge-effect weeds. Expect a bit of transport noise at intervals, but the massive shade trees and thriving bird habitat make it an excellent natural pitstop.
