Description

Erect perennial to 1.5 m high.

Stems simple or branched, ± glabrous except for axils and young shoots.

Leaves obovate or oblong-lanceolate or spathulate, to 20 cm long, to 5 cm wide, acute, thick. Inflorescence conical lengthening to cylindrical, 3–20 cm long, 3–4.5 cm wide. Bracts hairy especially along midrib, ovate to elliptic, mucronate. Perianth segments c. 20 mm long; outer surface with close woolly hairs, mixed with longer straight hairs towards top third, apex glabrous; inner surface glabrous except for woolly base. Stamens 2 or 3, staminodes 3 or 2. Ovary stalked, hairy at the top.
