Medium sized tree to 15m, only found in desert areas. Juvenile trees are columnar in shape with prickly foliage. Older, adult trees are spreading with drooping foliage. Bark is thick, rough, almost black and deeply grooved. Seed "cones" up to 6cm long.

Flowering start in July.


The main flower colour is other. Spreading foliage, thick black bark and large seed cones. One of the few large trees found in desert areas. Occurs often in pure stands.
