We are thinking of visiting Porcupine Gorge north of Hughenden on our way north after the Camel races at Boulia.
Has anyone been there recently and what are the road conditions there like. I believe the campground can be difficult to get into too.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Maureen

G'day David & Maureen,

We dropped into Porcupine Gorge last year on our way back from the Cape. It's now one of those Qld National Parks where you are supposed to book your sites over the internet prior to arrival. When you get there all sites are fenced off with wire and star pickets and suitable for tents, with signs "Pre-booked site only"
We arrived to find only two sites occupied and needed two sites to park our rig "ünhooked". We had not "pre-booked" as the decision to go in there was made half way between Charters Towers and Hughendon. How do you pre-book under those circumstances? (no internet cafe or CDMA/Mini-Max coverage and no phone reception!!). We were so disgusted with the situation, we forgot to put our money in the envelope.

Despite all this crap, we had a wonderfull two night stay, with the day allocated to the trek down into the gorge....absolutely beautiful....take a packed lunch in your rucksack, your trekking poles, and your camera.....you won't be dissapointed.

Just to the south of Porcupine Gorge, on the east side of the road, there is a track leading to the river where there is a magic free camp site on a billabong. As you drive north from Hughendon and getting close to the park, there's a turn-off to the river on the right side. You could camp in there and take the day trip into the Gorge without having to worry about the QNP crap.

Oh, and by the way, if you are travelling between Winton and Hughendon, plan a free camp beside the Corfield Race Club, go in and ask for BOG member Tony Foster, and you'll be made most welcome!! The food and hospitality is second to none!!

Have Fun...............Rob and Liz

Thanks Rob and Liz for info on the Porcupine Gorge NP. Will definitely stay there and that free camp by the billabong sounds like us. Hate mucking around trying to fit into tiny campgrounds and having to book in when you are not sure when you will get there or don't have coverage.
Also will follow up your advise to stop at the Corfied Race Club, sounds interesting.
Cheers, Maureen and David
