Hi I was wondering has anyone put shelves in their wardrobe instead of hanging? We are full time living in our van and I find that with winter clothes they take up too much room and am considering changing to shelves.

Please don't tell me that I have too many clothes Jack tells me all the time. By I DO NEED THEM ALL.

Any other (NICE) suggestions would be appreciated

Hello Stella & Jack,
Our answer to your question is no. We really like the hanging space.
HOWEVER we are seriously considering some shelves at the very back of the hanging space - in the tapered / sloping part forward of the hanging "zone". The aim is to use that space to put folded clothes not immediately required. You know the light weight stuff when in cold areas or the heavy weight / thick clothes when in hot regions.
So can we "but in" on your lot with another related lot?

Hi
we have three shelves in our robes up the top and have hanging space down below as on the road we mostly use our folded cloths and this way they are right at eyeline and yes you can fit a lot more.

I must tell though that our van has a yacht bed which means our cupboards are quite large.

Hi Steela,
We thought long and hard and decided to go with one of each during construction.

Within three months Jean (who had the hanging side) requested they be changed to shelves so now we have no hanging space. For us it makes sense as the most formal I ever get is a clean pair of jeans and a good shirt and Jean is much the same.

We also live in the van full time on the road and we get on fine with no hanging space. Buy clothes that don't easily crease and fold them carefully.. You will find you have heaps more room - some of the shelves are really deep.

Hi Stella and Jack,
We couldn't make up our minds either, so we had 2 removable shelves put in both wardrobes. The shelves are in two sections, a fixed small shelf right in the nose cone, and a removable larger section just behind the door (375 x 345mm. total weight of removable part, about 2Kg)
We did remove them pretty soon after moving in full time.

We also had BT put two drains in the en-suite, so it drains irrespective of which way the van leans. (the jockey wheel ensures we are always slightly nose high, so two drains are enough). Cannot understand why it is not yet a standard build feature.
cheers
Ian

Hello Stella,

Liz and I have shelves on both sides of Island bed. We find we only need about 1/2 dozen coat hangers so made a hanging rail under the bed.. Go to "PICTURES" click on "Tellem Bugrem" then scroll down to Space Savers....The first photo is "Coat Hanger Rail"......... The rail is wooden and cut down to fit in two standard bathroom towel rail brackets. Used the wooden rail in preference to the 1/2 inch chrome as the low profile plastic coated coat hangers don't slide along it as easily.

Cheers .............Rob and Liz.

Hi Stella,
we bought a "pre loved" B.T. about 4 years ago and it's 3/4 length wardrobe has 4 shelves (counting the floor of the 'robe as a shelf), being already converted from hanging space before we took over. It obviously was a "hanging" 'robe as the rod is still there.
We lived in our van full time for about 2 years and the only complaint we had was that it was a little dark on the lower shelves, this was over come by fitting low wattage lights to each area and our only problem was solved.
Bulky items were more often than not stowed under seats and sometimes in plastic storage bags if not needed for some time.
We have had previous vans with hanging space but think it a bit of a waste and would have no hesitation in having shelves fitted to any future vans, for us anyway it's the only way to go,
