Boulia Camel Races
This link will take you to the info page for the Boulia Camel Races 2012.
Starts on Friday July 13, not an auspicious date for the steer riders that evening I hope.
We had a gathering of BT's there in 2007, it started with just a few going and ended up as a mini muster.
If you are thinking to go we found it to be a great week, turn up early there is plenty going on around town to keep you interested.
Lots of good camping around for before and after the races.
Last time we were there and camped at the race track the organisers supplied plenty of firewood so I expect it to be the same this year.
Just remember the chain saw.
Regards
Bob

Hi Bob,
We had a great time at Boulia last year, except there were no camel races as tiger was 25mm of rain the night before the races.
Check the weather forecast before you go.

Yep, we too had a great time at the "Camel Races" last year even though the actual "camel" races were cancelled.
Our only worry was that "Boystoy's" vicious cat petrified our black labrador "Kelly" to the point where we had to promise her that in future she would have at the very least a "Jack Russell" to protect her !!!!!!.
"Only Jokin" Neil , & yes Bob it was a great time out there, was a pleasure to meet other BT owners and you never know -------------??? , on the table lands behind Cairns @ the moment so who knows, could end up there again.
In the mean time, take care & travel safe,
Judy, Tony & Kelly

Camp at the race grounds - well well managed by the Shire. A very entertaing week. You can usually find a few Bt's there.

Have to agree on that John.
The Shire looked after the campers very well when we were there last, heaps of firewood, regular cleaning of the grounds and amenities.
They did however have ample cheap labour on that occasion, prisoners from the local clink.
We found it good enough to return and we will be back this year.
Intend to arrive about the 9th so we have time for a bit of socialising.
Regards
Bob

Disaster averted.
After a wet week the rain finally cleared Saturday night.
The track was still too wet for racing on Sunday but they graded the really wet stuff off the top Sunday night and again Monday morning.
This allowed the sun and wind to to a good enough job to safely run a limited short course programme.
All the local volunteer groups that assist with this event put in the extra time to extend the event to enable the competitors a chance to earn some money and the visitors to see some racing, a good effort from a small town.
Seven races over a 400 meter course today (Monday) and even though about 70% of the crowd had decamped it was a good event.
Only the bookie finished in front though.

Bob there is an excellent truck wash in Boulia. No doubt you would have found it by now
We arrived in Boulia in the same condition as you a few years ago after almost getting stuck on the Diamentina lakes road. The mud must have weighed a ton on the truck and van!
Its a shame about the races being scaled down. We had a great time there in 2007.
Cheers, David and Maureen
