Bullita Homestead - NT

Bullita Homestead is a historic pastoral site on the banks of the East Baines River in Judbarra / Gregory National Park, about 56 km south of Timber Creek.The homestead was built in 1960 by Charlie Schultz and provides an insight into the isolated lives of the people who lived and worked on remote cattle stations in the Victoria River District.Bullita’s pastoral history extends back well before the homestead itself. The country formed part of the great cattle-station expansion into the Victoria River region, with the Durack family among the pioneering pastoral families associated with running cattle through this country. Later generations of pastoralists continued to work Bullita, managing cattle across vast areas of rugged and often difficult terrain.Today the preserved homestead and interpretive information tell the story of Bullita’s pastoral era and the families who lived and worked here, offering visitors a glimpse of life on an isolated northern cattle station.Bullita Homestead is 42 km from the highway. The homestead itself is in its original condition and the stock yards outside are lovingly maintained with local timbers, Lancewood and Bloodwood. The inside of the homestead is setup as a museum with excellent story boards.Access is via the unsealed Bullita Access Road, which turns south from the Victoria Highway approximately 10 km east of Timber Creek. A high-clearance 4WD is recommended and the road (and campground) is unsuitable for caravans with signed “no caravans” throughout the park. Access is generally during the dry season and the road may close after rain or during the wet season (December–April), so check current park road conditions before travelling.Judbarra / Gregory National Park requires an NT Parks Visitor Pass for interstate and international visitors. NT residents are exempt. No additional permit is required to visit Bullita Homestead.
