Bessies Castle - QLD

While many early outback landmarks were named after the wives, daughters, or sisters of the original station owners and pioneer surveyors from the late 1800s, local folklore also attributes it to the sheer eccentricity of the bush. A prominent local tale suggests the hill was playfully named after a well-loved station milking cow or a favourite horse named Bessie that used to escape and stubbornly base herself up on the high, safety-guaranteed flat ground of the jump-up to avoid being mustered!
