Information

The is the monument that the township of Castlemaine in the 1800's banded together to get built. The reason the Castlemaine township got together to built it, is that the Royal Society of Victoria spent funds on the monument to the Burke and Wills Expedition in Melbourne and so believed that it should be the only recognised monument in recognition to the Burke and Wills Expedition. Castlemaine thought otherwise, not only did the monument get built, but it also recognised the other participants that were on the expedition that the Royal Society of Victoria failed to give public acknowledge too.
