Point Avoid - SA

Point Avoid is a dramatic coastal headland located on the southern tip of Coffin Bay National Park. It is a premier sightseeing destination frequented for its panoramic, sweeping views of the wild Southern Ocean, the rugged limestone cliffs of Avoid Bay, and the offshore islands of the Avoid Bay Islands Conservation Park. The main point features a dedicated viewing platform that overlooks Golden Island, providing exceptional photography opportunities, particularly during heavy swells when massive waves crash against the rocky reefs. The location is highly accessible via a fully sealed bitumen road leading directly from the park entrance to a spacious parking area at the lookout, making it suitable for all vehicle types, including 2WDs, caravans, and motorhomes. Beyond the lookout infrastructure, things to do include birdwatching for sea eagles and ospreys, and exploring the adjacent coastal trails. Swimming at the immediate rocky point and adjoining ocean beaches is highly hazardous due to dangerous undertows and powerful surf, and is not advised.There are no camping facilities, toilets, or water provisions at Point Avoid itself, and overnight stays are prohibited at the lookout. The closest camping option is Yangie Bay Campground, located roughly 15 kilometres back along the main park road, which is accessible to all vehicles and provides toilets and picnic shelters. Entry into the national park requires a vehicle permit ($14.40) which must be booked online before arrival via the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia.
