Information
Barn Bluff is a prominent alpine peak within Tasmania’s Central Highlands, rising to around 1,559 m and forming part of the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Its steep dolerite cliffs and distinctive flat-topped profile make it a striking landmark, visible from many points along the Overland Track and from the summit of Cradle Mountain.
The summit is usually reached as a challenging side trip from the Overland Track, most commonly via Waterfall Valley or Pelion Gap. The ascent is steep and exposed, often involving scrambling and, outside of summer, snow or ice. Weather conditions can change rapidly and the climb is recommended only for experienced bushwalkers with suitable equipment and favourable conditions.
From the summit, there are expansive views across the Central Plateau, Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, and surrounding alpine valleys. Barn Bluff is a rewarding but demanding climb and should be regarded as a serious alpine objective rather than a casual side walk.
