Information
Dove Lake is probably the primary attraction for day trippers in the Cradle Mountain area. It is accessible by bus, car and foot and is near to the starting point of the most popular walks, including the multi day walk over the mountains to Lake St Clair.
A walk around the lake is very popular among visitors. The 6km track is surely one of the premier walks in Tasmania. Starting from the Dove Lake parking area, takes walkers around the glacially carved lake directly beneath Cradle Mountain. The walk offers both intimate and epic views of the famous mountain.
The track generally follows the shore of Dove Lake, traverses beneath the mountain, ascends to the summit of Truganini Point, descends to the old boat shed and then returns through magnificent rain forest to the starting point. The walk takes you through some of Tasmania's special vegetation, from button grass ?to myrtle, sassafras, fagus and King Billy pine. At a couple of places spur tracks provide access to sandy portions of the shore. Walk in a clockwise direction. The walk is rated as moderate and will take most people a little over two hours to complete.
