Information
The Ironbound Range is widely considered the most formidable and iconic section of Tasmania’s South Coast Track. Located within the remote Southwest National Park, this massive dolerite and quartzite massif presents a physical and psychological "crux" for hikers traversing the 85km wilderness route.Physical & Geographical Features
Elevation: The range rises abruptly from sea level to a maximum height of approximately 949–1,000 meters. The Climb: If walking west-to-east, the ascent from the Louisa River is a grueling 900-meter vertical gain over just 5 kilometers. The track consists of steep rock steps, narrow gravel paths, and extensive timber boardwalks on the higher, boggy plateaus. The Summit: The top is a vast, windswept alpine plateau. In clear weather, it offers some of the most spectacular views in Australia, stretching from the Western and Eastern Arthur Ranges to the jagged cliffs of the Southern Ocean.
